Jack Dangermond Answers Questions about Esri and GIS

I'm pleased to share with you a series of questions to and answers from Esri on a variety of topics. Many of these topics were raised by those of you who participated in our preconference survey last month. We greatly appreciate the time and thought you put into your survey responses. We read them very carefully, and they help us with our conference and product planning.

We also use this opportunity to share the status of our efforts in software development, products, education, and support; future plans in these areas; and thoughts on GIS and the industry as a whole.

Our purpose for sharing this information is to help you prepare for the Esri International User Conference and, ultimately, to help you be successful in your use of GIS. I hope you gain value from this information. Please feel free to share it with your colleagues.

The NEEA (National Enhanced Elevation Assessment) webpage with its associated fact sheets are now live at http://nationalmap.gov/3DEP/neea.html

The National Enhanced Elevation Assessment was conducted to (1) document national-level requirements for improved elevation data, (2) estimate the benefits and costs of meeting those requirements, and (3) evaluate multiple national-level program-implementation scenarios. While at the site check out the NEEA Final Report; it's well written and contain lots of great information!

Also, you may not have heard of 3DEP yet. Well the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) initiative is in response to a growing need for high-quality topographic data and a wide range of other three-dimensional representations of the Nation’s natural and constructed features. TomTom Offers Free Daily Map Changes on All Devices


CONCORD, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 28, 2012 — Starting today, TomTom is enabling all of its 60 million portable navigation devices to receive free daily map changes via the TomTom Map Share community. Map Share enables drivers to keep their maps up-to-date by making immediate changes on their device and to receive similar updates from the Map Share community around the world. Map Share was previously only available on a limited number of TomTom devices.

Map Share technology enables drivers to keep the TomTom map on their device up-to-date with immediate changes in their area. Dynamic road changes, such as changed speed limits, new street names, blocked roads and new traffic directions can be updated directly on the device. Drivers then have the choice to share those road changes with TomTom and the broader Map Share community. All TomTom customers can now download daily Map Share changes for free.

“Roads change all the time. Overnight, roads can close or traffic can be diverted, having a big impact on people’s journey times,” says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director from TomTom. “With Map Share, drivers can update their own map themselves right away. Plus, we have an active community of drivers who share around 250,000 road changes with TomTom and each other every month. We are pleased to expand our community, because the more people who use Map Share the greater the navigation experience for all our customers.”

Map Share enables people to quickly and easily report and share the most frequent road changes. More structural, long-term changes such as the addition of roads or roundabouts are validated and updated within TomTom’s maps and made available on a quarterly basis. TomTom applies a hybrid approach to map-making that includes the combination of authoritative sources, such as field collection, government data or satellite imagery, with community input to ensure its maps accurately reflect reality.

Availability

Map Share is already available for many TomTom customers. Starting today, all TomTom Start, VIA and GO customers will be able to receive free daily map changes form the TomTom Map Share Community via a simple, free software update.

Notes for editors

Daily map changes include the more dynamic, frequent changes that drivers are likely to encounter such as:

•Changed speed limits
•New street names
•Blocked roads
•New traffic directions
•Altered turn restrictions

Drivers have control over which daily map changes they load onto their device. They can choose to accept changes submitted by some or many other Map Share users, or only those verified by TomTom.

Quarterly map updates are still be available for all TomTom devices, either for a fee or free with devices eligible for lifetime map updates.

165TB of New Imagery Added to Bing Maps

Today we’re thrilled to announce the publication of our largest satellite release to date. In fact, this release is larger than all of our past Aerial releases combined!



The latest Aerial release includes new Satellite imagery as well as Global Ortho photography. Both releases total 165 terabytes of new data live on Bing Maps. Prior to this, our existing Aerial footprint was 129 terabytes total.

As of today the Global Ortho project is 85% acquired and published. Just this month, Bing Imagery Technologies hit a significant milestone by completing 100% of aerial photography over the United States. The photography in Europe is slated to be finished by this fall and all updated imagery should be published by the end of 2012.

The Aerial Global Ortho release of June, 2012 is a total of 160 Areas of Interest (AOI), and spans 1.03 million square kilometers. To date, Bing Maps has a total of 1,266 AOIs that stretch across 9.54 million square kilometers!
