Esri Updates Terms of Use on (Free) Personal
Accounts for ArcGIS Online
Notice: ESRI Terms of Use Update
What's changing? We are changing the name from ArcGIS Online Personal Account to ArcGIS Online Public Account. The ArcGIS Online Public Account will continue to be available at no cost and, as such, is licensed for personal, noncommercial use only.Under the updated Terms of Use, ArcGIS Online Public Account holders can:
- no longer share items privately or create private groups
- continue creating public groups and sharing items publicly, or keep all items private for their own viewing
- keep private groups and private items if a personal account was created before November 30
(Note: We will not make any existing private groups and associated items public.)If you want to continue to create private groups so you can share items privately, you can purchase an annual ArcGIS Online subscription, which also gives you access to all ArcGIS Online features and services.
So, in short:
- a name change to the account type to Public Account
- no private items or private groups from here on
- existing private items and groups will stay that way if created before November 30
- The name change of the account to Public Account makes it clear all new additions are public or for the account owner's use.
- The private groups and items are now only available in the subscription version of ArcGIS Online. Esri is tweaking the "free" part of the "freemium" part of the service.
- Esri is respecting its users by not turning items and groups that were private to public.

SCAUG Growth
Good Friday Afternoon,
Well, There are a lot of GIS activities going on in the region despite summer slowing down & school starting up. Several of you have probably noticed a flood of emails reminding everyone to sign up for training & workshops along with the 15th Anniversary OKSCAUG conference coming up the 24th - 27th of September. The conference is proving to be a huge success so far with attendees coming in from 9 states & total attendance expected to be between 275 & 300.
There are also several other opportunities on the horizon regarding local training & SCAUG assisting various GIS functions in the region. If you know of any event or have a suggestion for one please let us know. Have an idea for a training class you would like in your specific area? Think you can pull a few people together to get the class started? That is exactly what we are looking for. With that need identified we can work with you from there to make it a reality.
From training classes to conferences, sister organizations events to ESRI rollouts, help make SCAUG the one stop shop for all your GIS resources & needs in the area.
To give you a quick sampling of some of the events we are currently working on please go to the events tab listed on the SCAUG website. SCAUG EVENTS

Jack Dangermond Answers Questions about Esri and GIS
Warm
regards,
Jack
Dangermond
I'm
pleased to share with you a series of questions to and answers from Esri on a
variety of topics. Many of these topics were raised by those of you who
participated in our preconference survey last month. We greatly appreciate the
time and thought you put into your survey responses. We read them very
carefully, and they help us with our conference and product planning.
We
also use this opportunity to share the status of our efforts in software
development, products, education, and support; future plans in these areas; and
thoughts on GIS and the industry as a whole.
Our
purpose for sharing this information is to help you prepare for the Esri
International User Conference and, ultimately, to help you be successful in
your use of GIS. I hope you gain value from this information. Please feel free
to share it with your colleagues.
I
look forward to seeing you in San Diego.

The NEEA (National Enhanced Elevation Assessment) webpage with its associated fact sheets are now live at http://nationalmap.gov/3DEP/neea.html
The National Enhanced Elevation Assessment was conducted to (1) document national-level requirements for improved elevation data, (2) estimate the benefits and costs of meeting those requirements, and (3) evaluate multiple national-level program-implementation scenarios. While at the site check out the NEEA Final Report; it's well written and contain lots of great information!
Also, you may not have heard of 3DEP yet. Well the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) initiative is in response to a growing need for high-quality topographic data and a wide range of other three-dimensional representations of the Nation’s natural and constructed features. Read all about it at the link above!

TomTom Offers Free Daily Map Changes on All Devices
CONCORD, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 28, 2012 — Starting today, TomTom is enabling all of its 60 million portable navigation devices to receive free daily map changes via the TomTom Map Share community. Map Share enables drivers to keep their maps up-to-date by making immediate changes on their device and to receive similar updates from the Map Share community around the world. Map Share was previously only available on a limited number of TomTom devices.
Map Share technology enables drivers to keep the TomTom map on their device up-to-date with immediate changes in their area. Dynamic road changes, such as changed speed limits, new street names, blocked roads and new traffic directions can be updated directly on the device. Drivers then have the choice to share those road changes with TomTom and the broader Map Share community. All TomTom customers can now download daily Map Share changes for free.
“Roads change all the time. Overnight, roads can close or traffic can be diverted, having a big impact on people’s journey times,” says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director from TomTom. “With Map Share, drivers can update their own map themselves right away. Plus, we have an active community of drivers who share around 250,000 road changes with TomTom and each other every month. We are pleased to expand our community, because the more people who use Map Share the greater the navigation experience for all our customers.”
Map Share enables people to quickly and easily report and share the most frequent road changes. More structural, long-term changes such as the addition of roads or roundabouts are validated and updated within TomTom’s maps and made available on a quarterly basis. TomTom applies a hybrid approach to map-making that includes the combination of authoritative sources, such as field collection, government data or satellite imagery, with community input to ensure its maps accurately reflect reality.
Availability
Map Share is already available for many TomTom customers. Starting today, all TomTom Start, VIA and GO customers will be able to receive free daily map changes form the TomTom Map Share Community via a simple, free software update.
A video providing an overview of TomTom’s Map Share can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6O23csHkMk.
Notes for editors
Daily map changes include the more dynamic, frequent changes that drivers are likely to encounter such as:
•Changed speed limits
•New street names
•Blocked roads
•New traffic directions
•Altered turn restrictions
Drivers have control over which daily map changes they load onto their device. They can choose to accept changes submitted by some or many other Map Share users, or only those verified by TomTom.
Quarterly map updates are still be available for all TomTom devices, either for a fee or free with devices eligible for lifetime map updates.

What is SCAUG?
What is SCAUG?
Is it an organization that hosts conferences?
Is it an organization that hosts User Group Meetings?
Is it an organization that hosts training?
It definitely is all that but it is a lot more than that if you show us what you need...
It is an organization created out of necessity. The need for there to be a cohesive group of GIS professionals in the region. That necessity was noticed 22+ years ago & is more applicable today than it was in its inception. As time & technology change who is better suited to steer the direction of SCAUG than the members? SCAUG can & does bring training, presentations, technical sessions, & resources to areas across our region. But... only if we know what you need. If we can see the need then we can work towards filling it. We are currently hosting several ArcGIS Basics I & II classes in Oklahoma which are always full. SCAUG is having Sub-chapters hosted events around the region. OKSCAUG is hosting its 15th annual conference this year. With all this growth we need your input.
Click here for a current listing of events within the SCAUG region
http://www.scaug.org/Default.aspx?pageId=1175551
And...
Click here to submit suggestions for more events or functionality you would like to see from SCAUG.

We hope to see you at an event in the future or better yet hear a suggestion for another resource we can provide across the region.

Busy time of year...
Good Friday Afternoon,
Well we are a little over one week away from the 22nd Annual Regional SCAUG Conference in McAllen, TX. There have already been countless hours of time and effort put into this conference before the first attendee arrives. We hope you take time at some point in this conference to stop for a moment & appreciate the opportunity you have both personally & professionally to attend this event. Use your time wisely & go home from the event richer & more professionally equipped to do your job than ever.
On a local note, OKSCAUG hosted a booth this Wednesday ( March 14, 2012) at GIS day at the Oklahoma State Capitol. We are fortunate to have several excellent professionals on the OKSCAUG Committee. This resource allowed the booth to be attended constantly even though everyone working the SCAUG booth had their own booths to attend as well. It is a very committed & talented group that I am blessed to be associated with.
At the SCAUG booth we had over 160 contacts sign up for the free Kindle Touch give away. Troy Messer from McCloud, OK was the winner at the drawing held that day. OKSCAUG hosted bottled water & various give away items through the day. All in all it was a very productive day with many old faces & several new ones signing up as SCAUG contacts.
Have a good weekend & I hope to see you in McAllen. Be careful if you are traveling on Spring break:)

Mobile and the New GIS Revolution - The GIS industry and Web maps are on the verge of a revolution. Mobile is that revolution. Strong statements, but tracing the history; GIS applications first migrated from the desktop to the Web.nomenclature can be a time-consuming task. ESRI moved from ArcInfo, to ArcIMS and ArcGIS. On the Web Google introduced slippy maps and gobs of free data.
